Geary Yonker

Democrat for State Senate 20th District

Help power our grassroots campaign!

A candidate for everyday people.

Geary Yonker has been organizing and raising a family on the west side of Logan Square for the past 22 years. Born in Chicago, Geary understands the plight of everyday people in our city because he grew up in a working-class family that struggled, like so many others do every single day.

He knows what it’s like to not have the heat on in the house during cold Chicago winters, to work hard for a living, to raise two kids in the city, and to care for an ailing parent in your own home. He believes that we should be providing more support to the hard working people of this state and to parents who are fighting everyday to make a better life for their kids.

For the past 25 years, Geary has been supporting independent journalism as an executive at non-profit news outlets WBEZ Chicago and the Chicago Reader. This has given him a front row seat on the issues and challenges faced by our city and state. He is one of the founders of the Logan Square Arts Festival which has hosted over 400,000 guests and raised tens of thousands of dollars for neighborhood non-profits. He is also the President of the Kosciuszko Park Advisory Council which advocated for, and won, $2 million dollars in improvements to Logan Square’s largest park. He has a degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a life-long Democrat that has fought for progressive causes here in the city of Chicago and around the Midwest.

“Families of all kinds are the foundation of our state and need better representation in Springfield.”

Geary Yonker Believes in…

Putting Illinois Families First.

  • Help families cover the high costs of child care.

  • Support a new state child tax credit.

  • Eliminate the state sales tax on groceries.

  • Fund our neighborhood schools and our selective enrollment schools.

  • Fight for universal at-home care for all of our seniors.

  • Control property taxes by fighting corruption and finding more progressive state funding solutions.

Restoring Public Safety.

  • Address the root causes of crime and the immediate consequences of crime at the same time.

  • Provide state funds to reopen shuttered mental health clinics and to hire new mental health first responders.

  • Create a new State Police task force that targets the flow of illegal guns into Illinois from neighboring states.

  • Rebuild the essential trust needed between the people of Illinois and law enforcement.

An Illinois for Everyone.

  • Create long-lasting solutions to aid recent immigrants and for ALL people experiencing a housing crisis. No more short term fixes.

  • Provide funds for cities to build more affordable housing and for small developers to build new additional dwelling units.

  • Lift the state ban on rent control and let the voters decide the issue.

  • Provide the funds necessary to keep Illinois a safe haven for the LGBTQ community and for women from other states seeking abortion care.

Putting People Over Profits.

  • Ban Illinois lawmakers from working as lobbyists while they are in office.

  • Fight gas and electric rate increases that burden working families.

  • Fast track the closure of all coal fired power plants still operating in the State of Illinois.

  • Require all business working with the state to pay fair wages, provide health care benefits, and share profits with their workers.

  • Be Chicago again. Not just a place for tech companies to have a Midwest outpost but a place that makes things, moves things, and builds things.
